British Airways Flight BA2204: A Stewardess Hospitalized After Toxic Fume Leak
A British Airways flight encountered a terrifying incident as a toxic fume leak broke out in the cabin, leading to a stewardess being rushed to the hospital. The incident occurred on a flight from the Dominican Republic to Gatwick Airport on Tuesday night.
Passengers reported a strong, unpleasant odor towards the back of the plane, while crew members experienced symptoms of illness throughout the flight. One stewardess, in particular, felt severely nauseous and dizzy, prompting her to be taken to a hospital near Gatwick as a precaution. The affected flight attendant was later released without any serious medical concerns.
The Boeing 777-200 aircraft was examined by engineers upon arrival, and sources revealed that the issue originated from the back of the cabin. The incident sparked concerns about carbon monoxide poisoning, a potential hazard in such situations. Carbon monoxide leaks have occurred on flights due to defects in exhaust or cabin heating systems.
This incident is not an isolated case. Regulators have installed active carbon monoxide detectors on piston-engine aircraft, and campaigners have called for investigations into toxic fume events. British Airways has faced similar incidents, with 85 reported cases on BA jets in 2019 alone. Last July, a BA 777 declared a full emergency due to toxic fumes, causing it to dump fuel over London before returning to Gatwick.
The situation is further complicated by a lawsuit filed against Airbus, the rival plane manufacturer to Boeing. An American Airlines attendant claims she became severely ill while working on an Airbus jet, with an incident at Phoenix Airport in January 2024. The attendant, Tamar Ferrel, accused Airbus of negligence, attributing the incident to an odour of dirty socks that caused coughing and gagging. She now suffers from short and long-term health effects, drawing a comparison to the impact of head trauma with chemicals.
British Airways has assured that the health and well-being of its customers and crew are of utmost importance, and they are investigating the incident on Flight BA2204.
