Otchere-Darko Addresses Alleged Calls to Remove Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader
Legal practitioner and New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Otchere-Darko has addressed the alleged calls within the party to remove Alexander Afenyo-Markin from his position as Minority Leader in Parliament. In an interview on Asaasepa on February 3, 2026, Otchere-Darko stated that he has not heard of any such calls. He believes the Minority in Parliament is strong and performing commendably.
Otchere-Darko expressed confidence in Afenyo-Markin's leadership, citing a recent sighting of the Minority Leader with the NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He mentioned, 'I haven’t heard calls that they should remove Afenyo-Markin, but I think the Minority has done well. They have held this party together for the past twelve months.'
However, the issue of leadership succession has been a topic of debate. Presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong called on Afenyo-Markin to step down, citing internal power struggles and the desire for new leadership. Agyapong stated that Afenyo-Markin is financially well-established and should allow those challenging him to take over. He claimed that criticisms of Afenyo-Markin's leadership style stem from internal party struggles, with some arguing that the Minority Leader should come from specific regions.
Despite the controversy, Otchere-Darko remains supportive of Afenyo-Markin, emphasizing the stability and strength of the Minority in Parliament. The debate over leadership and the future direction of the NPP continues to unfold, with various stakeholders expressing their opinions and concerns.
