Arne Slot: Liverpool's Transfer Strategy & Premier League's Extreme Change (2026)

Is the Premier League becoming less enjoyable to watch? Arne Slot certainly thinks so, but he's adamant Liverpool's transfer strategy is staying the same!

It seems the beautiful game is evolving, and not necessarily for the better, according to Liverpool's new head coach, Arne Slot. In a recent press conference, Slot expressed his view that many Premier League matches are no longer a "joy to watch." He pointed to a shift in emphasis, with a heavier reliance on set-pieces and sheer physicality, moving away from the intricate, possession-based style once popularized by Pep Guardiola's Barcelona.

But here's where it gets interesting: despite this perceived shift in the league's overall style, Slot insists that Liverpool's core transfer philosophy remains firmly in place. The club will continue to prioritize signing young players, even if they lack prior experience in the Premier League. Slot explained that the beauty of this model lies in the belief that these developing talents can indeed improve and adapt.

"Our model is that we sign young players," he stated, as reported by Ian Doyle of the Liverpool Echo. He elaborated that it's natural for younger players to need more time to adjust to the demands of the Premier League compared to seasoned professionals in their late twenties. However, he stressed, "it’s exactly the reason why we have our model, because we believe that players can get better." He also drew upon Liverpool's past successes, highlighting how the club has achieved significant results with this very approach, citing achievements from six years ago and last season.

This suggests that Liverpool's recruitment team, including Slot himself, has faith in the young signings made last summer (with the notable exceptions of Alexander Isak and Milos Kerkez, who already had Premier League experience) to succeed in the long run.

And this is the part most people miss: while the club is committed to its model, Slot did admit that the extreme nature of the league's stylistic change this season was not something they fully anticipated. "A rebuild takes time, a transition takes time, and that’s what we did last summer," Slot remarked. "But we didn’t expect the league to become like it did this season. You couldn’t know this because last season it wasn’t as extreme as it is this season."

He went on to explain that this is a common phenomenon in football: when a particular approach proves successful, others tend to copy it. He reminisced about how, a decade or so ago, many teams aspired to play like Barcelona. He even expressed a hope that the eventual World Cup winner would achieve victory through exciting, open-play attacking football rather than for other reasons.

Looking ahead, Liverpool has already secured one significant signing for the summer: Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, in a deal reportedly worth £60 million. However, he is set to arrive recovering from surgery for a dislocated shoulder.

What do you think? Does the Premier League's increasing physicality make it less appealing? And is Liverpool's strategy of signing young, unproven talent the right way to go, especially with this shift in the league? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
